It takes a 7 year process in Veracruz, Mexico to make Kahlua Rum and Coffee Liqueur.
The Kahlua website details this process which we found interesting.
It starts with growing 100% Arabica coffee beans and sugarcane in the high mountains of Veracruz. The coffee is then harvested, dried, and aged for at least 6 months.
Meanwhile, sugarcane stalks are crushed, juice is collected and boiled into a molasses, then yeast and water are mixed and left to ferment. Once sugar is converted into alcohol, the spirit is distilled until it reaches proof, then stored in barrels.
After 7 years, coffee is roasted in micro-lots, and ground to extract the flavor. The extract is combined with the sugarcane spirit, vanilla and caramel, then rested for eight weeks before being filtered and bottled.
Kahlua Rum and Coffee Liqueur is available in a 1 L bottle and normally priced at $17.99.
There’s currently a $4 instant rebate which lowers the price to $13.99.
Discount is valid till 12/01/13.
