Tag Heuer Carrera Caliber 36
Tag Heuer Carrera Caliber 36 is a beauty and a remarkable engineering marvel.
It’s an automatic (mechanical) chronograph, with 1/10 second precision. That means the mechanical movement oscillates 10 times per second! The manufacturer claims this is the world’s first mechanical chronograph with this precision.
There are quartz watches available with higher precision, but 1/10 second is already at the upper limit of human reaction time.
You do need to react and press the start button to time an event, so your action is already introducing that 1/10 sec level of uncertainty; so having a stopwatch more precise than 1/10 second is actually unnecessary.
This watch uses a unique rotating scale at the 3 o’clock position to record the minutes for the chronograph. And an equally unique caliper at the 9 o’clock position to record the 1/10 second.
There’s also a tachymeter ring for average speed calculations.
A date window and sapphire crystal help round out the feature list.
In this case form follows function, and the watch is beautiful as well, in stainless steel with black dial and red accents.
The watch appears to be TAG’s model CAV5115.BA0902.
The Tag Heuer Carrera Caliber 36 is priced at $6,799.99.
