There’s an interesting story of how Hi-Chew was created.
In the 1930s Taichiro Morinaga wanted to create a gum that could be swallowed like any other food because of the Japanese cultural taboo against taking food out of one’s mouth. He ended up creating Chewlets in 1931.
Business was interrupted due to World War II and it’s not till 1975, that Chewlets was re-introduced as Hi-Chew. It’s popular not only in Japan but in many other Asian countries as well.
